SISD moves into new UIL district for 2012-2014

Feb. 2 marked the date that school administrators and coaches all over the state waited for and collectively dreaded. The release of the new 3A numbers, high schools with between 450 and 1004 students enrolled put Seminole in District 2-3A along with Andrews, Levelland, Lubbock Cooper, Lubbock Estacado and Shallowater.

Monahans and Greenwood will remain in District 4-3A with Abilene Wylie, Big Spring, Sweetwater and Snyder, while Fort Stockton moves to District 3-3A with Anthony, Clint, Clint Mountain View, Fabens, Pecos and Presidio.

Athletic Director Chris Burtch saw the new district as a pro rather than a con.

“To be honest, I see it as a competitive district from fall through spring both athletically and academically,” Burtch said. “It will be less travel and we are familiar with all the other schools, so I think it is a positive.”

SHS’s enrollment figure of 645 is over 300 students less than Lubbock Cooper’s 953 students, while Andrews has 912.5, Levelland has 773, Estacado has 747.5 and Shallowater has 451 students.

Seminole coming in as a small school in the new district does not phase Burtch.

“We are going to be way smaller…,” Burtch said, “but I’ll match our kids up whether it be on the football field, basketball court or theater state against anyone from those other schools.”

Statebound--Seniors Haylee Dodson and D.J. Rickman will compete in Austin in March at the state cross-examination debate tournament. The team took second place in district competition in Andrews and will advance along with district champion Monahans.

Senior Haylee Dodson will make another trip to the state cross-examination debate meet on March 12-13 with partner senior D.J. Rickman after they took second place in the district C-X debate tournament held in Andrews on Feb. 2.

Juniors Trey Dodson and Zeth Henson took third place at the district meet becoming alternates to state.

The C-X teams earned 28 points toward the overall spring academic meet title. Other academic teams will complete the district meet process the first week in April.
