SkillsUSA sees two dozen qualify for state
SkillsUSA automechanics, cosmetology and career prep students competed at the District Two competition in San Angelo on Feb. 10-11. Twenty-four events placed students either first or second qualifying them for state competition on March 22-24 in Corpus Christi.
In automechanics junior Erick Wiebe took first in aviation maintenance technology and second in job interview, while sophomore AJ Froese took second in aviation maintenance technology. Sophomore Ashley Ledesma was second in automotive tool identification and second in extemporaneous speaking. Sophomore Ernesto Moralez was second in power equipment technology and first in extemporaneous speaking. Senior Ricky Dueck was third in related technical math. Senior Shawn Banman was second in automotive service technology. Senior Miguel Carrillo was first in mobile electronics installation, while sophomore Jay Jenkins was first in power ewuipment technology. Freshman Kaleb Lambert was first in automotive tool identification, and junior Dayne Browne was first in customer service, second in mobile electronics installation and third in automotive service technology.
In cosmetology, senior Bronia Olivas was first in chapter display, while the Quiz Bowl team of freshman Janet Froese, sophomore Annie Klassen, junior Gabby Pinon, graduation Rebekah Redekopp and freshman Susie Enns was first. Redekopp was second in cosmetology while the team of Cynthia Barron-Rey and Pinon were first in nail care technology.
In career prep, the Quiz Bowl team of senior Melvin Fehr, junior David Froese, Dueck, sophomore Adriel Wolfe and junior Elijah Becker was first. The emblem ceremony team of juniors Kristen Alvarado, Cera Castillo and Tonya Sodd was second. In computer mainenance technology senior Marcos Iglesias was third. In prepared speech Becker was first and Iglesias was second. In related technical math, Becker was first. In customer service, Fehr was third. In Occupational skills, senior Collin Bensing was first and senior Steven Curb was second.
