SkillsUSA students attend district competition today
Students competing in SkillsUSA will be attending district competition today and tomorrow at Howard College Training Center in San Angelo. Members will compete in a variety of skill and leadership competitions.
Sophomore Annie Klassen competed in nail art as a freshman and was drawn to a new contest this year which involved face painting in cosmetology.
“I joined SkillsUSA because I like competing,” Klassen said. “The event I’m competing in is aesthetics, and I’m doing that because I like painting.”
Senior Miguel Carrillo has been preparing for his career prep and auto tech events for the district competition.
“I’m competing in prepared speech and automobile production,” Carrillo said. “I’ve been getting ready for SkillsUSA by going over my speech, and I’ve been practicing automobile production in class.”
Students who made it to state last year hope to make it again to the state competition held in Corpus Christi in March.
“I hope to do well enough to make it to state,” junior Kristen Alvarado said. “I want to make it to state for the trip to Corpus. We get to see places like the Lexington, and state competitions are really fun up there.”
